Keep Your Roofline Safe: How to Spot and Fix Soffit & Fascia Wood Rot

Your soffit and fascia do more than give your roof a finished look — they protect your home from water damage, pests, and wood rot. But because they’re constantly exposed to the elements, soffit and fascia boards are some of the first places homeowners discover wood rot.

What Causes Soffit and Fascia Wood Rot?

Water is the enemy. Clogged gutters, leaky roofs, or poor attic ventilation can trap moisture where it shouldn’t be. Over time, this dampness creates the perfect conditions for wood rot fungus to grow and spread.

Signs Your Soffit or Fascia Might Be Rotted

Look for:
✅ Peeling paint or warped boards
✅ Soft spots when you press on the wood
✅ Visible cracks, holes, or mold
✅ Pests or squirrels getting inside your attic

How to Fix Rotted Soffit and Fascia

If the damage is small, you may be able to remove the rotted sections and patch them with new wood. But for larger areas, it’s usually best to replace entire boards and repaint or seal them to keep moisture out.

Prevent Future Wood Rot

✔ Keep gutters clear and flowing.
✔ Check your attic ventilation to avoid trapped moisture.
✔ Inspect your soffit and fascia every year for early signs of damage.
